Sterling Heights is a city in Macomb County, in the Detroit metro area.
According to one tradition, the community was named for Azariah W. Sterling, settler while another says it was named for Sterling, NY. In 2005, Morgan Quinto Press named Sterling Heights the safest city in Michigan. It is also the 29th safest in the United States according to Morgan Quinto.
The city has a total area of 95.0 km² (36.7 mi²). 94.9 km² (36.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.14%) is water.
